The one drive worth hiring a car for: Albufeira to Benagil and Carvoeiro

Updated September 24, 2026 · 8 min read

Two natural rock arches at the edge of a golden cliff above turquoise water, a small boat drawing a wake in the bay beyond

If you hire a car in Albufeira for one day only, this is the day. Praia da Marinha, Benagil and the Carvoeiro boardwalk lie within about twelve kilometres of each other on the finest stretch of cliff in the Algarve, and not one of them has a bus from Albufeira. It is around 35 kilometres out, roughly the same back, and it fills a day comfortably without any of it being spent on a motorway.

The route runs east to west: Albufeira → Praia da Marinha → Benagil → Carvoeiro and Algar Seco, with Ferragudo as an optional extra at the end. That order is not arbitrary. It puts you at the car park that fills first, first.

Leave earlier than feels reasonable

In July and August the whole day turns on one decision, and you make it before breakfast.

The car park above Praia da Marinha is free and small, and in high summer it is full within an hour or two of sunrise. Once it is, the police close the access road about a kilometre short of it, and there is no second car park to fall back on. Since sunrise in July is around half past six, that window closes somewhere between half past seven and half past eight – so leaving Albufeira by 7 am is the version that reliably works, and leaving at 10 am in August means you drive to the barrier and turn round.

Out of season none of this applies and you can set off when you like. That is the single biggest difference between this drive in February and the same drive in August.

Praia da Marinha, 30 to 35 minutes from Albufeira

Twenty-five to thirty road kilometres west, on the N125 and then down through Lagoa; the A22 saves little on this leg.

The view most people come for is from the clifftop, not the sand: two rock arches standing in the water, the ones every Algarve poster uses. You can see them without going down at all, which matters because the way down is stairs and steep slope, with no step-free route – not a beach for a pushchair, and a real consideration with a toddler or anyone unsteady.

Facilities are thin on purpose. There are toilets at the clifftop car park and none on the beach, no showers and no sunbeds for hire. A snack bar operates up top, priced accordingly and queued accordingly in August. Bring water; bring more than you think in July.

If you want the walk rather than the beach: the Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos starts at the western end and runs just under six kilometres along the cliff edge, past Benagil to Vale Centeanes – two and a half to three hours each way. There is essentially no shade on it. In high summer that is a dawn walk or not a walk at all.

Benagil, five minutes further

The village sits in a cleft in the cliff, and the road down to it is narrow. The small car park in the village is chargeable over the summer season; there is a free area a couple of hundred metres from the beach. Both are gone early. The reliable move in August is to park up on the road above and walk the ten to fifteen minutes down – which also means walking back up in the afternoon heat.

Now the honest part, and it is the reason this article exists on a site that sells boat trips.

You cannot reach the cave by car, and you cannot reach it on foot. The famous chamber with the hole in its roof opens onto the water, landing on the inner beach is prohibited, and unguided craft are not permitted in the cave area at all. From the clifftop you can look down through the opening if you know where to stand – and that is a very different thing from being inside it.

So the drive gets you the coast and the village. For the cave itself you want a boat from the water or a guided kayak that launches at Benagil beach – the Benagil cave tours and the kayak tours both do it, and Which boat to Benagil? sets out which type actually gets inside. Combining the two works well: drive the coast in the morning, book an afternoon departure from the beach you have just parked at.

Carvoeiro and Algar Seco, another ten minutes west

Carvoeiro is the easiest stop of the day. The boardwalk is free and open all year – about 600 metres of raised walkway along the clifftop between the little fort and Algar Seco, where the sea has cut the rock into arches, windows and pillars. It takes an hour if you dawdle, and it is the one part of this route that works in the middle of the day, because you are moving and there is a breeze.

Parking is genuinely easy here by Algarve standards: two free dirt car parks on the clifftop, one at either end, each four to five minutes’ walk from the boardwalk. There is also a smaller paid car park closer in, chargeable over the summer months. The free ones are the better trade.

Ferragudo, or turn for home

If the day still has light in it, carry on fifteen minutes west to Ferragudo, a whitewashed fishing village on the east bank of the Arade opposite Portimão – a square, a harbour, a short walk and an early dinner. From there the A22 takes you back to Albufeira in around half an hour.

Otherwise turn at Carvoeiro. Back by the A22 it is roughly 35 minutes.

What the season changes

June to September: leave by 7 am or accept that Marinha is off the list. Every car park is a competition, the clifftop has no shade, and the snack bars have queues. In exchange, the sea is warm and the afternoon boats run.

October to May: the drive is a different and in some ways better one. Parking is free, empty and unhurried, the light on the cliffs is lower and kinder for photographs, and the walk is actually pleasant. Against that, some beach facilities close out of season and the boat trips run to a thinner timetable – check before you build the day around one.

When the guided tour is the better buy

Three cases, and it is worth being straight about them.

The cave. Covered above: no road reaches it.

Lunch with wine. The drink-drive limit in Portugal is 0.5 g/l, and 0.2 g/l for anyone who has held a licence for less than three years. If the day you want involves a bottle at an inland restaurant, the day trips from Albufeira with a driver are the honest answer, not a car.

Unsurfaced tracks. Several of the car parks and the approaches to them are dirt. Underbody, tyre and rim damage sits outside most rental waivers – excess, deposit and what gets added at the counter has the detail.

Practical notes for the drive

The A22 has been toll-free since 1 January 2025, so no transponder is needed for any of this. Fuel in late September 2026 averaged €2.107 a litre for unleaded 95 and €2.210 for diesel nationally, per the DGEG – call it €10 to €12 of fuel for the whole round trip in a small car. The last stretches to Marinha and Benagil are single-track in places with stone walls and no verge; meeting a coach on them is the one bit of driving on this route that asks anything of you.

If you are hiring for this day, compare hire cars for Albufeira rather than taking the first desk at the airport. And if it turns out to be the only driving day you want, do you need a car in Albufeira? does the arithmetic on hiring for one day against a taxi.
