Do you need a hire car in Albufeira?

Updated September 24, 2026 · 8 min read

The short answer: for a week in Albufeira built around the beach, the old town and a boat trip or two, you do not need a car. The boats from Albufeira leave from the marina or the town beach, both of which you can reach without one. The moment your plans include the cliffs west of town, the hinterland or a beach that is not the town beach, the answer flips.

This article is about that dividing line – what you reach without a car, what it costs, and where a car stops being a luxury.

What is walkable

The old town is compact. From the church down to Praia do Peneco through the pedestrian tunnel is a few minutes; Praia dos Pescadores is next to it. The lift at the Peneco end saves you the climb back up, which matters more than it sounds in August.

Two places people underestimate. The marina is about 25 minutes on foot west of the old town – flat at first, then not. Several operators put their check-in there, and 25 minutes with beach bags before a 9 am departure is a different walk than the one you did the evening before. And Areias de São João, the strip of bars up on the eastern plateau, is a 25 to 30 minute walk with a hill in the middle.

The Giro buses, which are better than their reputation

Albufeira’s municipal network runs five colour-coded lines – green, blue, two red and orange – with 168 stops, and it covers a good deal more than the centre: Guia, Olhos de Água, Galé, AlgarveShopping, Açoteias.

  • On-board ticket: €1.40. A one-day tourist ticket costs €4.00 and is unlimited.
  • Hours: roughly 7 am to 10 pm from October to May, 7 am to midnight from June to September. The orange line starts earlier and finishes earlier: 6.30 am to 9.30 pm in winter, 6.30 am to 11.30 pm in summer.
  • Frequency is the catch. Reckon on about half an hour on weekdays, and noticeably worse on Sunday afternoons and public holidays.

The orange line is the one that matters for arrivals: it runs to Ferreiras and stops at the train station, roughly every half hour.

Train and long-distance bus

The station is called Albufeira-Ferreiras and it is about five and a half kilometres north of the old town. That distance is the whole story: the train itself is good, getting to it is the chore.

Regional fares one way, as of July 2026: Faro around 30 minutes for €3.80, Lagos a good hour with no change for €5.45, Tavira one to one and a half hours, usually changing at Faro, for €6.60. In all three the station sits 10 to 15 minutes from the centre. What the train does not serve usefully is Silves and Loulé – both stations are a long way out of town.

From Faro airport, the Aerobus (line 56) runs to Albufeira and on to Lagoa, Portimão and Lagos for €11. There are around seven departures a day in the summer season and three in winter, so it is worth checking your flight against the timetable before you count on it. It sets you down at the bus terminal, about 1.5 kilometres north of the old town – uphill on the way back.

A taxi from the airport is typically quoted at €45 to €60 for the 40 to 50 minute run. Uber and Bolt both operate in the Algarve and are usually cheaper, from around €30, though cars thin out in winter. Licensed ride-hailing cars carry a TVDE sticker in the window.

What genuinely falls away without a car

This is the honest part of the list, and it is shorter than the rental desks would like – but it is not empty.

  • The clifftop between Carvoeiro and Benagil. No bus goes there. Praia da Marinha, the Algar Seco boardwalk and the start of the Seven Hanging Valleys trail are car-only from Albufeira.
  • Benagil beach itself, and with it the guided kayak tours that launch from there – they expect you at a car park above the village and offer no pickup.
  • Monchique and Fóia, where you would need to change in Portimão and no scheduled bus runs to the summit at all.
  • The quieter western beaches – Salgados and Praia de São Rafael among them. The Giro runs as far as Galé; past that you are on your own.
  • Sagres and Cabo de São Vicente, around three hours each way by public transport.

What does not fall away: the cave itself. No road reaches the inside of it. That is a boat or a kayak either way, and the Benagil cave tours from the marina depart from a place you can walk to. If you are weighing up which one, Which boat to Benagil? goes through the differences.

What a car costs once it is here

The rental price is the part people compare. The rest is the part that surprises them.

Parking. The municipal car parks are not expensive but they are seasonal. Under the town’s parking regulation, P5 charges €1.00 an hour from November to May and in October, €1.50 in June and September and €2.00 an hour in July and August. P6 is cheaper at €0.80 to €1.00. The metered spaces on Avenida da Liberdade are chargeable from 9 am to 7 pm outside the summer, and from 9 am to 1 am from June to September. Free street parking exists further out and is gone by mid-morning in August.

Fuel. In the week of 21 to 27 September 2026 the national average was €2.107 a litre for unleaded 95 and €2.210 for diesel, according to the energy directorate DGEG.

Tolls. None on the Algarve motorway. The A22 has been toll-free since 1 January 2025 under the law published on 7 August 2024, so you do not need a transponder for it. The A2 towards Lisbon still charges.

The counter. The excess, the deposit and the extras added at pickup are a subject of their own – see Excess, deposit and what gets added at the counter.

If you do want one, it is worth comparing before you land rather than at the desk: compare hire cars for Albufeira.

Who the answer changes for

A family with a small child. The argument for a car here is not the distance, it is the gradient. Albufeira’s beaches sit below the town, and the way back up with a tired four-year-old is the reason people stop taking the bus by Wednesday. Against it: you will need the child seat you booked to actually be there, and you will be parking in July at €2 an hour.

A couple without a licence between them. Nothing on this page is out of reach except the clifftop. Take the €4 day ticket, use the train for Faro and Lagos, and put the saved money into a guided day trip for the bits the bus cannot do.

Two weeks rather than one. This is where it tips. One or two day trips are cheaper by train and taxi than a week’s hire plus fuel plus parking. From roughly three or four driving days onwards, the car wins – and it wins on flexibility long before it wins on price.

One caveat that has nothing to do with money: the drink-drive limit in Portugal is 0.5 g/l, and 0.2 g/l for anyone who has held a licence for less than three years. A long lunch with wine at an inland restaurant is one of the good reasons to let someone else drive.

So: yes or no

No, if your week is the beach, the old town and the boats. Yes, if you want the cliffs west of here, the hinterland, or beaches with fewer people on them – and yes if there are small children and a hill between you and dinner. If it is one single drive you are after rather than a week of them, the coast road west is the one to hire for.
