Hire car in Albufeira: excess, deposit and what gets added at the counter

The price you compared online is the rental. The number that can actually hurt you is the one on the contract you sign at the desk, and there are two of them: the excess and the deposit. They are not the same thing, they are rarely the same amount, and almost every unpleasant surprise at an Algarve rental counter comes from confusing them.

This article explains what the words mean and what to check. It deliberately does not quote a price for your rental – those depend on the operator, the vehicle group, the season and how long you keep the car, and an invented figure here would cost you real money. Where exact amounts are given below, they are one named operator’s published terms, used as a worked example.

The excess: what you still owe after the insurance pays

The excess is the maximum you are liable for if you damage the car. Basic cover does not make damage free; it caps your share. Rental firms in Portugal call it franquia, and the amount is set by a tariff table that depends on the vehicle group.

Take Guerin, one of the larger Portuguese operators, as the example. Its terms say that without the collision damage waiver, your liability runs up to the maximum excess in the table in force at the start of the rental – and that towing and vehicle recovery costs sit entirely with you, outside the excess. With the waiver, your liability drops to the minimum excess in the same table.

So the first question at the desk is not “am I insured?” but “what is my excess, in euros, on this car?” If the answer is not written on the contract, do not sign it.

CDW is not comprehensive cover

This is the single most common misunderstanding. CDW – collision damage waiver – is what gets sold as Vollkasko, cobertura total, “full protection”. It is not comprehensive insurance. It is a waiver with a list of exceptions, and the exceptions are precisely the damage that happens on holiday.

In Guerin’s terms the waiver does not extend to damage to windows, the underside and the roof of the car, rims, tyres, windscreens, and interiors damaged by vandalism.

Read that list against the driving you are planning. The car parks above Benagil and Praia da Marinha are unsurfaced. The lanes down to the smaller beaches are narrow, walled and stony. Underbody and tyre damage are not freak events on this coast – they are the normal way a holiday car gets hurt, and they are outside the waiver at exactly the moment you assumed you were covered.

Two ways to bring the excess down – and what they do not do

Operators sell the reduction twice over, under different names.

Excess reduction. Guerin’s Redução de Franquia lowers your liability to €300 for its Mini, C and P groups and €500 for the other groups. It is available on all vehicles at a daily rate that varies by group, and – this matters for anyone staying longer – for a maximum of 15 days. It does not cover glass breakage or damage caused by negligence.

Super CDW. The next product up removes the excess liability altogether, again at a daily rate by group and again capped at 15 days.

Both are sold at the counter and both are worth what they cost on a road trip, provided you know two things. First, the 15-day ceiling: a three-week hire is not fully covered by either, whatever the desk implies. Second, “negligence” and the exclusion list above survive the upgrade in most contracts – kerbing a wheel on a dirt track is often still yours.

The alternative is a third-party excess policy bought before you travel, usually much cheaper than the counter product. The difference is not the cover, it is the cash flow: the rental firm still charges you the excess, and you claim it back afterwards with the damage report and the invoice. If a four-figure charge on your card for several weeks is a problem, that difference is the deciding one.

The deposit: a different number, and a slower problem

The deposit – caução – is not what you pay. It is an amount blocked on your credit card for the duration of the rental. Guerin’s published terms say it varies with the vehicle type and category, the length of the hire and the cover you have taken, and that the release depends on your bank and normally takes several working days after you return the car.

Three practical consequences:

  • You need a real credit card, physical, valid, and in the main driver’s name. Debit cards, prepaid cards and virtual cards are routinely refused, and a card in your partner’s name will not do if the contract is in yours.
  • The blocked amount reduces your available credit for the whole holiday. On a low-limit card, a deposit plus a fortnight of restaurants is a genuine squeeze.
  • It comes back slowly. Budget for the money being gone for a week or two after you fly home, not for it reappearing on the day.

Taking the top insurance product usually lowers the deposit as well as the excess. That is often the honest reason to buy it.

Age, extra drivers and the rest of the counter

Minimum age is per vehicle group, not per country. In Guerin’s conditions the smaller groups – MINI, C, P, E, E1, J and J1 – need a driver of 21 with at least one year’s licence; the larger groups G, H, L, N and O need 25 with three years. A young driver surcharge applies to the first set, and the amount is not published: it appears in the quote once you enter your age. Enter it truthfully at the booking stage, or you will meet it at the desk instead.

Additional drivers are charged per day by most operators and must be present with their licence at pickup. Naming nobody and swapping seats anyway voids the cover for the whole rental.

Fuel policy. Full-to-full is the one to look for: you get a full tank and bring it back full. The alternatives – prepaid tank, “full to empty” – mean buying a tank at the operator’s price and giving away whatever is left. For reference, the national average in the week of 21 to 27 September 2026 was €2.107 a litre for unleaded 95 and €2.210 for diesel, according to the DGEG.

Tolls. You do not need a transponder for the Algarve. The A22 has been toll-free since 1 January 2025 under the law published on 7 August 2024. If the counter offers you a toll device, ask whether it carries a daily service charge – you would be paying it for the A2 to Lisbon and nothing else.

Drink-driving. The limit in Portugal is 0.5 g/l, and 0.2 g/l for anyone who has held a licence for less than three years. Any alcohol-related incident takes your cover with it.

Before you sign

Photograph the car from all four corners plus the roof, the wheels and the underside of the bumpers, with the date visible, before you leave the bay – and do the same on return. Check that the excess figure, the fuel level and the return time are written on the contract, not just agreed verbally. And compare the excess and the deposit, not only the daily rate, when you book: compare hire cars for Albufeira.
