Coastline and Benagil by catamaran – the 2.5-hour trip from Albufeira marina

At €30, 4.7 stars and 5,039 reviews, the catamaran trip along the coast to Benagil is the most-reviewed catamaran leaving Albufeira marina. It is also the one that is most honest about what it cannot do – you just have to read the operator’s own website to find it.

Who runs it, and on which boat

The operator on the booking page is Oceanexplore, Marítimo Turística, Lda, which sells under the name SeaAlgarve. The boat is a catamaran for up to 65 guests, with a top deck and, unusually for this price bracket, toilets on board. Guides work in English, French, Portuguese and Spanish.

Snacks and drinks are sold on board, but cash only – the booking page lists card payment among the things that are not included, which is an odd way to put it and easy to miss. Hotel pickup is not included either; you make your own way to the marina.

That combination is what makes the catamaran the boat for people the fast boats do not suit: it sits steadily in the water, there is shade, there is a toilet, and you can stand up and walk about. The operator describes the trip as suitable for all ages and its boat as wheelchair accessible.

Meeting point and check-in

You meet at the SeaAlgarve ticket office near Gate 3 at Albufeira marina, with a green flag on top. The operator recommends parking at the marina reception or in the underground car park, from where it is a five to ten minute walk. Check-in is 30 minutes before departure.

The listed duration is 2 hours 30 minutes, and the operator qualifies it: the trip takes between two hours and two hours 45 minutes, depending on sea and conditions.

What you see, in order

The boat heads west out of the marina and passes, in this order: Praia de São Rafael, Praia da Coelha, Praia da Galé, Praia dos Salgados, Armação de Pêra, Praia da Nossa Senhora da Rocha, the natural arch of Albandeira and Praia da Marinha – then Benagil. On the way back east the boat stops for a swim of about ten minutes in open water.

That is the honest shape of the trip: a coastal cruise of around two hours with a famous cave at the far end and a short swim on the return. If you had imagined a long stop inside the cave, read on.

What the operator says about the cave

SeaAlgarve puts it plainly on its own website: “no one can enter the Benagil cave itself. This means that we are only allowed to show you the cave from the boat.”

The rules behind that sentence come from the Portimão harbour master’s office. Motorised vessels may enter the Benagil sea cave only through the western entrance, the visit is limited to two minutes, and landing on the sand inside or swimming in is prohibited. On top of that, size matters: up to five motorised vessels may be inside at once and the old twelve-metre limit has been gone since July 2025, but the arch is low and narrow. A 65-seat catamaran is not manoeuvring in and out of that opening for a two-minute look.

So what you get is the cave from the water, from outside the entrance, with the coastline either side of it. Whether that is enough is exactly the question in which boat to Benagil? – and if you want to be inside, under the round hole in the roof, that is a kayak tour, with an eight-minute allowance instead of two.

What can be cancelled, and what cannot

The swim stop and the approach to the caves are subject to sea conditions, in the operator’s own words. A day with swell is a day without a swim, and the trip still runs. You can cancel yourself free of charge up to 24 hours beforehand; below that there is no refund and no change of date.

Glass is not allowed on board. Beyond that the boat carries the usual: life jackets, a briefing, and a crew that will point out the Alfanzina lighthouse and the beaches you cannot reach on foot.

Who it is not for

  • Anyone who wants to go inside the cave. This boat does not, and says so.
  • Anyone counting on the swim. Ten minutes, and only in the right conditions.
  • People who want speed. For the thrill of a fast boat, look at the speedboat trip or the jet boat.
  • Anyone hoping to pay by card on board. Bring cash for drinks.

And one for the other side: if you are travelling with small children, with someone unsteady on their feet, or with a back that does not enjoy being slammed into a wave, this is the boat on this stretch of coast. The details for the youngest are in Albufeira with toddlers.

The catamaran is not the cheapest and not the fastest. It is the most comfortable, and the one whose limits are stated in advance rather than discovered on the day. All of them are listed under Benagil cave tours and catamaran tours.

The short version

Two to two and three quarter hours along the prettiest stretch of the central Algarve, on a boat with shade, a toilet and room to move, ending with a ten-minute swim. The cave is seen from outside, by law and by size. Book it for the coast and the comfort, not for the photograph under the hole in the roof.
