Speedboat from Albufeira: Benagil Cave and Dolphins in Two Hours
Updated September 10, 2026 · 5 min read
For €31.19 per person, this two-hour tour promises the Benagil Cave, a swim stop and a search for dolphins. With 4.6 stars from 6,754 reviews, it ranks third by review count in our Albufeira listings. What the booking page doesn’t reveal at first glance: the same company is behind the most-reviewed tour – and the real difference between the two is the boat.
Who runs it – and on which boat
The operator is Dream Wave Algarve, based at Marina de Albufeira. According to the booking page, the group trip runs on the “Insónia”; Dream Wave operates six boats of this type.
According to the operator, the Insónia is a rigid inflatable boat, a RIB: 9 metres long, 2.90 metres wide, 310 hp diesel, room for 12 to 18 guests. You sit on individual seats with back and head support, low down and close to the water.
What’s missing: according to Dream Wave, the Insónia has no toilet – that’s only on the larger boat, the “Dreamer”. The operator doesn’t mention a sun canopy. Plan for full sun.
The booking page most recently listed several options: the group trip on the Insónia (2 hours, up to 18 people), a 2.5-hour version on another boat (“Moments”), and a private trip for up to twelve people. In the low season, Dream Wave can also move the Insónia trip onto the Dreamer.
Meeting point in the marina
Check-in is at the Dream Wave kiosk in front of the “Gate 4” café, right next to the boat access (Passeio dos Oceanos, Lote 5, Loja 31). In summer, check-in starts 40 minutes before departure, in the low season 20 minutes. According to the operator, it’s about a 25-minute walk from the old town; by car, you park in the marina’s P3 car park, and the fee isn’t included in the price.
What happens in the two hours
The route runs from the marina westward, along the cliffs to the Benagil coast; the booking page mentions the beaches São Rafael and Marinha along the way. As the crow flies, it’s around 14 kilometres to the cave. Albufeira isn’t the nearest harbour here – Portimão is closer to Benagil.
The order isn’t fixed. On its own site, Dream Wave describes the caves first and the dolphins on the way back; guests also report the reverse order. The booking page says so openly: the route depends on the dolphins.
At the cave: the boat is allowed in for “only a few minutes”, with a possible wait at the entrance in high season. Under the decree of the Portimão port authority, motorboats get two minutes through the western entrance – more on that in Benagil Cave from Albufeira – Is It Worth It?. Getting off inside the cave is prohibited.
The swim stop: the booking page mentions a “short swim stop”, but only if the sea allows it. What’s described is a swim in the sea, not being dropped off on a beach. Exactly where you swim isn’t stated anywhere – certainly not inside the cave, where swimming in is prohibited. Bring swimwear and a towel, without counting on it.
The dolphins: a sighting isn’t guaranteed; according to Dream Wave, there’s explicitly no refund without a sighting, and the operator doesn’t mention a free repeat trip. For realistic chances: Dolphin Watching from Albufeira.
Two hours instead of two and a half – what’s left out?
No specific item. Dream Wave describes the same programme for both the Insónia and the Dreamer: caves, dolphin search, swim stop depending on the sea. The operator doesn’t say what’s cut from the shorter trip. Where the missing half hour comes from – the dolphin search, the swim, or the coast – is decided on the day. Anyone who wants more time on the water for certain should take a 2.5-hour trip.
When the tour is cancelled or cut short
The sea state decides. If the Polícia Marítima bans entry, the booking page says the cave is shown “from a safe distance”; in bad weather or rough seas, the trip is rescheduled subject to availability. Both happen: reviews from October and November 2025 mention trips without entering the cave because of the swell, and a short-notice rebooking.
You can cancel free of charge via the booking page up to 12 hours in advance (as of September 2026) – check the deadline when booking. And don’t schedule the trip for your last day of holiday.
Who it isn’t for
- Pregnant women and people with back problems: according to the booking page, the tour isn’t suitable for either. On its own site, Dream Wave also lists neck problems and babies under one year. If in doubt, ask a doctor beforehand – not the crew.
- Anyone who needs a toilet or is travelling with very young children: Dream Wave itself recommends the larger Dreamer for that. The operator doesn’t state any further minimum age.
- Wheelchair users: Dream Wave states that boarding the RIB isn’t accessible without a minimum level of personal mobility. Get confirmation of what’s possible beforehand.
- Anyone who wants to get off inside the cave: that’s no longer possible on any tour.
- Anyone who doesn’t cope well with wind: the boat sits low in the water, and the booking page recommends a jacket.

The most direct alternative is the most-reviewed tour: same price, same kiosk, same company. If you like being close to the water, take the Insónia; if you need a toilet and more space, take the Dreamer. For the general comparison of boat types, see Which Boat to Benagil.
You’ll find all the combinations under Benagil Cave Tours and Dolphin Watching.
In short
A RIB for up to 18 people, two hours from the marina, cave and dolphins in a varying order, swimming only in calm seas. No toilet, no mention of shade, nothing for back problems or pregnancy. For the same price as the most-reviewed tour, you get the smaller boat – and half an hour less.
