Benagil from Albufeira – is the trip actually worth it?

The Benagil cave is the most photographed stretch of coast in Portugal, and in Albufeira it is sold on every second corner. What nobody tells you at the booking desk: the cave is not in Albufeira. It sits roughly 25 road kilometres further west, in the municipality of Lagoa.

That is not a reason to skip the trip. It is a reason to know what you are booking.

How far it really is

From Marina de Albufeira to the Algar de Benagil is a good 13 kilometres by sea – about seven nautical miles. By road it is 25 to 30 kilometres depending on the route, and a solid half hour of driving.

For comparison, and this is the part operator pages tend to leave out: from Marina de Portimão it is under ten kilometres, from Carvoeiro barely four, from Armação de Pêra around six. Albufeira is not the closest harbour to the Benagil coast. Anyone claiming otherwise is selling.

What that means for your 2.5 hours

Almost every cave tour from Albufeira runs two to two and a half hours. How much of that is actually spent at the cliffs depends entirely on the hull:

• Speedboat or RIB (20–25 knots): roughly 20 to 30 minutes each way. That leaves a good half of the trip for coastline and caves.
• Motor catamaran (around 10 knots): more like 40 to 50 minutes each way. Out of two and a half hours, about ninety minutes go on transit alone.

That is the real decision – not a five-euro price difference. If the cave is what you came for, the hull matters more than the deal.

What is allowed inside – and what is not

More has changed here in recent years than most travel sites have noticed. The Portimão port authority is responsible, under Edital 019/2024 and its 2025 amendment 009/2025. Since 2024 the area belongs to the Recife do Algarve – Pedra do Valado marine nature park.

Prohibited:

• Landing on the beach inside the cave. For private visitors and companies alike. That famous photo of someone standing on the sand under the ceiling opening can no longer be recreated legally.
• Swimming in, including with flotation aids.
• Entering when visibility is under 1000 metres, diving, night trips, fishing.

The penalty ranges are not a scare story: landing and swimming carry fines of 2,200 to 44,000 euros. If you read “up to 2,500 euros” somewhere online, you are reading an outdated figure.

Also frequently misquoted: the old rule of “maximum three boats, no longer than twelve metres” stopped applying in July 2025. Currently up to five motorboats may be inside at once, and no length limit appears in the text any more. The skipper has to assess the situation continuously and abort if in doubt.

And the number that tells you most about the visit: motorboats may stay inside for two minutes. Kayak groups get eight. That is not a visit, it is a pass-through.

What Albufeira does better

If distance argues against Albufeira – what argues for it? Choice and frequency.

That is more choice in one place than the closer harbours offer combined, and more departures per day. If your morning slot is cancelled, there is an afternoon one here. Elsewhere there is one tomorrow.

On top of that, nearly every operator combines the cave with dolphin watching or a swim stop. That is not a coincidence but the logical answer to the transit – if you are out for an hour anyway, the crossing becomes a programme. If you wanted the combination regardless, the distance costs you little.

When it is worth it – and when it is not

Worth it: you are staying in Albufeira, you want to have seen the cave once, and you are happy to take the dolphins or the swim stop with it. Then a speedboat from Albufeira is a good day out for around 30 euros.

Not worth it: you have a rental car and what you really want is maximum time at the cliffs. Then drive the half hour to Carvoeiro or Armação de Pêra and book a shorter, cheaper tour that starts right at the coast. Honest is honest.

Also not worth it: you expect to get out inside the cave. That is no longer possible, wherever you start from.

The alternative on your own doorstep

Albufeira has its own sea caves, right in front of town between Praia da Falésia and Galé. None with a hole in the ceiling, but a good twenty small grottoes you can see from the inside by kayak – with no hour of transit. Guided kayak tours start at around 18 euros, making them the cheapest way to get on the water here at all.

For many travellers that is the better second hour on the water – and for some, the better first.

The short version

Benagil from Albufeira is a good tour with an honest caveat: part of the time is transit. Take a fast boat if the cave is the point, take a catamaran if the day on the water matters more than the photo – and expect two minutes under the ceiling opening, not an afternoon on the cave beach.
