Small-group dolphins and Benagil Cave – the €36 trip with a marine biologist
Updated September 17, 2026 · 6 min read
At 4.8 stars from 4,609 reviews, the small-group trip from Albufeira marina is among the best-rated boat trips on this coast – and at €36 the dearest of the four that sell in real numbers. The difference is not the route. It is how many people are on the boat with you.
Eighteen seats, two guides
The operator is Seacret Tours. The boat is a semi-rigid, the booking page caps the trip at a maximum of 18 guests, and the crew is a skipper plus an on-board marine biologist – two guides, which the operator lists as a feature rather than a promise for good weather only.
For comparison: the most-reviewed trip out of this marina carries 47 people on a jet boat, and the cheapest of the four runs boats seating 19 to 45. Eighteen is a different kind of morning. You hear the commentary without a microphone battle, everyone has a rail, and the boat is small enough to get into narrow caves that the big hulls pass by.
The route is 18 kilometres of coastline west from the marina, taking in sea caves, the Alfanzina lighthouse above Carvoeiro, and Benagil – the booking page adds “subject to access”, which is the honest formulation. Listed duration is 2 hours 30 minutes.
Where to be, and when
The meeting point is the operator’s shop at Passeio dos Oceanos, Lote 4, Loja 4, 8200-394 Marina de Albufeira, and check-in is 30 minutes before departure. Seacret lists departures from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the low season and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the high season.
One contradiction worth clearing up before you pay: the booking page lists hotel pickup and drop-off among the included services, while Seacret’s own site says guests make their own way to the marina. Ask which it is for your date. If you are counting on being collected and no one comes, the 30-minute check-in is gone.
What is included, and what is not allowed
Included are the skipper, the guide, the safety briefing, life jackets, the small-group format and a swimming stop when sea and weather allow it. No toilet is listed among the services, and a semi-rigid rarely has one – on a trip of two and a half hours, plan for that before you leave the marina.
The operator’s list of what is not allowed on board is unusually specific: smoking, luggage or large bags, alcohol and drugs, and party groups. The last one is a deliberate choice of clientele, and it is a large part of why this trip is rated as it is.
What to bring, per the booking page: warm clothing, sunglasses, a sun hat. Warm clothing is not a mistake. A semi-rigid at speed in the morning is cold, even in July.
Dolphins: what is actually promised
Nothing. Seacret says it plainly: “While we have a high success rate, sightings of dolphins and other marine life cannot be guaranteed, as they are wild animals living freely in their natural environment.” There is no second-trip guarantee.
What genuinely improves the odds – time of day, season, sea state – is in dolphins from Albufeira: how likely are sightings really?. The short version: early, calm, and not in the middle of the afternoon.
The marine biologist is the part that survives a blank day. On a trip where the dolphins do not appear, you still get an explanation of why they did not, which species use this coast and what the birds diving ahead of the boat mean.
The cave, and its two minutes
Benagil is not a stop, it is a passage. The Portimão harbour master’s office allows motorised vessels in through the western entrance only, for two minutes, and prohibits landing on the sand inside or swimming in. Up to five motorised vessels may be inside at once and the old twelve-metre limit has been gone since July 2025, but the arch is low and narrow, which is where a small semi-rigid has the advantage over a catamaran: it fits, and it can wait for a gap.
Two minutes is still two minutes. If you want to sit under the opening in the roof and look up without a skipper counting, that is a kayak tour, where the allowance is eight minutes – described in the Benagil kayak tour to the caves and secret spots.
Who it is not for
- Children under five. The booking page excludes them outright.
- Pregnant women and people with back problems. Also excluded – a semi-rigid transmits every wave into the spine.
- Anyone over 120 kg. A stated limit, not a suggestion.
- Anyone who needs a toilet within two and a half hours.
- Groups looking for music and drinks. Explicitly not this boat.
For families the practical line is the Benagil boat trip with children: five-year-olds are allowed here, but allowed and happy are different things.
How it compares
| Trip | From | Stars | Reviews | Boat | Guests |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| This trip (Seacret Tours) | €36 | 4.8 | 4,609 | Semi-rigid | max 18 |
| Benagil caves and dolphins, 2.5 hrs | €31.19 | 4.6 | 13,018 | Jet boat | 47 |
| Dolphin watching and Benagil Cave | €26.40 | 4.7 | 6,863 | Motor boat | 19–45 |
| Coastline and caves by catamaran | €30 | 4.7 | 5,039 | Catamaran | up to 65 |
Nine euros and change separate the cheapest from this one. What they buy is a boat with eighteen people on it and a biologist who has time to answer. Everything on this stretch is listed under Benagil cave tours and dolphin watching.
The short version
The trip to book if you would rather pay more than share the rail with forty-six strangers. Confirm the pickup question before you book, dress warmer than the weather suggests, and treat the dolphins as a possibility rather than a purchase.
