Dolphins and Benagil Cave from Albufeira – what the budget boat trip offers

With 6,863 reviews and 4.7 stars, “Dolphin Watching and Benagil Cave” ranks second on our Albufeira list – and at €26.40 it is the cheapest boat trip from Albufeira among the 20 best-selling tours. Here is what the short description leaves out.

Who runs it – and on which boat

The operator is XRide Algarve, a boat company with its own office in Marina de Albufeira. Two types of boat run this route: the orange X Ride and the smaller, white X Plorer. At booking you choose between the options “large boat” and “small boat”. Depending on the boat, the operator says 19 to 45 guests go along.

XRide’s own information on the toilet contradicts itself: according to its own website, the X Ride has a WC and the X Plorer does not; the booking portal checkyeti says “no toilets”. Anyone who needs one should ask beforehand. XRide gives no information on shade; in the booking page’s photos, X Ride guests sit in the open air.

The point in the small print: XRide reserves the right to change the time and the boat without prior notice. For the X Plorer, XRide itself states it is not suitable for pregnant women, people with back problems, or children under six. For the X Ride, the operator only asks that pregnancy or reduced mobility be stated when booking and at check-in. According to the operator, only the X Ride is wheelchair-accessible, and no boat takes pushchairs. Anyone this applies to should get XRide to confirm before paying which boat is running and whether it works for them.

Meeting point and check-in

The meeting point is the XRide office in Marina de Albufeira, Cais H, office 12. The marina lies west of the old town, and parking is available nearby according to the operator. For autumn 2026, XRide lists up to seven departures a day between 9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Check-in is 30 minutes before departure at the office, and the rule is strict: miss it, and you neither sail nor get your money back. Glass is banned on board, and food and drinks are not included. According to the booking page, the crew speaks English, Spanish, French and Portuguese – German is not listed. Guests report that a tip box is passed round at the end.

What happens in the 2.5 hours

After the safety briefing and putting on life jackets, the boat heads west. XRide describes the route as the coast between the marina and Praia do Carvoeiro; Benagil Cave lies just before that, about 13 kilometres west of the marina by sea (around 25 by land). According to the operator, the boat reaches it after about 30 minutes. Albufeira is not the nearest harbour here – why the trip can still be worth it is explained in Benagil Cave from Albufeira – is it worth it?

Along the way the crew looks out for dolphins, and there are also cliffs, smaller caves and a swim stop where, according to the operator, guests swim from the boat next to a beach. XRide does not name a fixed order. So the outward and return legs together take around an hour, and the rest belongs to the coast, the dolphins and the swim.

Inside Benagil Cave itself, it is brief. XRide advertises sailing into the cave. However, the Portimão Harbour Master’s Office only allows motorboats through the west entrance and for two minutes, and landing or swimming in is forbidden.

And the 150 minutes are not a promise: according to the booking page’s review summary, some guests experienced closer to two hours; one guest reports elsewhere losing half an hour when the swim stop and dolphins were dropped.

When what gets dropped

  • The whole trip: XRide cancels and refunds in poor sea conditions or bad weather. You can cancel yourself free of charge up to 24 hours beforehand.
  • The cave: whether the boat goes in depends on the swell and the harbour authority. If the caves are closed, XRide’s terms allow no refund – the trip still runs, just without its main attraction.
  • The swim stop: dropped in swell – and, according to the operator, also if anyone on board is seasick.
  • The dolphins: XRide gives no guarantee. The real odds are covered in Dolphin watching from Albufeira.

Why it is cheaper

XRide gives no reason. Two things are documented: the booking page shows the price in September 2026 as a discount against a higher standard price, and on its own website XRide lists adult prices “from €35”. The €26.40 is a from-price that can change with date, group size and availability.

The price is not alone: in the full listing, two other dolphin-and-cave trips from Albufeira also start from €26.40, both with far fewer reviews: the X Plorer, which XRide also sells separately, and a catamaran from AlgarExperience with a marine biologist on board.

Who it is not for

  • Anyone who definitely needs a toilet on board – the X Plorer has none, and the boat can change.
  • Pregnant women, people with back problems, and families with children under six, as long as it is not confirmed which boat is running – XRide itself excludes them from the X Plorer.
  • Anyone who wants to see the cave at leisure. Two minutes is a pass-through; by kayak it is eight.
  • Anyone who wants to stay dry. Guests report getting wet and the boat bouncing hard in rough seas.

The short version

A well-rated trip at the lowest price among the best-selling boat trips – with two catches: the boat can change without notice, and a closed cave is not refunded. Book early in the day, be at the marina office half an hour beforehand, and expect two minutes under the opening in the cave’s roof.
