Benagil caves and dolphins from Albufeira: the 2.5-hour trip on the jet boat "Dreamer"
Updated September 10, 2026 · 5 min read
No trip in our catalogue has more reviews: 13,018 of them, 4.6 stars on average, for €31.19 per person and 2 hours 30 minutes on the water. Behind it is Dream Wave Algarve, an operator based at the Marina de Albufeira, in business by its own account for around 20 years. Here is what the booking page leaves out.
The boat: a jet boat for 47 people
According to Dream Wave’s fleet page, the “Dreamer” is 13.95 metres long and 4 metres wide, has two engines and, instead of propellers, a jet drive. It is said to reach up to 35 knots. On board are 47 guests, a skipper and two crew. How many Dreamers there are, the operator states differently in different places: sometimes one, sometimes four. Alongside it run six rigid-hull inflatables (RIBs) of the Insónia type with 12 to 18 seats.
- Toilet: yes, according to the operator – unlike on its RIBs.
- Shade: the description mentions an open outdoor deck; no sun canopy is mentioned anywhere. Expect sun.
- Stability: Dream Wave itself recommends the Dreamer for families with small children and older passengers, because it sits more steadily and boarding is easier. Whether that is enough for your situation, get confirmed beforehand.
- Seats: one review says you have to stand up to see the dolphins. Another calls the ride over the waves “a bit bumpy”.
The operator advises a windbreaker, hat, sun cream, water, swimwear and a towel. Prams, pets and large luggage are not allowed, according to the booking page.
Meeting point: outside the Gate 4 Café at the marina
The meeting point is Dream Wave’s desk outside the Gate 4 Café at the Marina de Albufeira (Passeio dos Oceanos, Lote 5, Loja 31). Dream Wave asks guests to arrive 40 minutes before departure in summer, 20 minutes in the low season. There is no hotel transfer.
The marina lies west of the old town. On foot, the operator reckons on about 25 minutes. The municipal Giro bus gets you there on route 3, the red line; by car, there is a paid car park under the marina.
What happens: west first, then open water
The route according to the booking page: from the marina west past São Rafael, Praia do Castelo, Galé and Salgados to Armação de Pêra, a photo stop at Nossa Senhora da Rocha, then the rock arch of Albandeira, Praia da Marinha and finally Benagil. On the way back comes the search for dolphins in open water. A swim stop is planned if the sea allows it. The order is explicitly not fixed.
The route is long: Benagil lies about 25 road kilometres to the west, in the municipality of Lagoa, and a good 13 kilometres by sea – Portimão is closer. Why that is not a reason to rule the trip out is explained in Benagil from Albufeira – is it worth it?. On this trip, the journey itself is the programme. The cave is a moment within a coastal cruise, not its main part.
Commentary is given, according to the booking page, in six languages, including German, and marine biologists are part of the crew. If no guide is on board for your language, there is an audio guide, spoken in Portuguese and English. One German guest reports getting a QR code instead of a German announcement. Expect English.
Does the Dreamer go inside the cave?
The operator plans for it: the boat may “stay only a few minutes inside the Benagil caves because of local regulations”, and there can be a wait at the entrance. Dream Wave promotes the jet drive on the grounds that it makes entering and leaving caves easier, because no propeller can strike the rock.
Even so, entry is not guaranteed. If the harbour police forbid a visit because of the swell, the crew shows the caves “from a safe distance”. On review sites, individual guests report that the boat only stopped in front of the entrance. And when it does work: under the rules of the Portimão port authority, motorboats may stay two minutes inside the Algar, and getting out onto the inner beach is forbidden.
When the trip is cancelled – and what happens then
- Swell: if the sea does not allow the trip, Dream Wave offers a new date; otherwise you get your money back.
- Cancelling yourself: free up to 24 hours before departure, rebooking the same.
- Cave closed: not a cancellation. The trip still runs, just without entering.
- No dolphins: there is explicitly no refund for that, and a free repeat trip is not mentioned. How realistic sightings are is covered in Dolphin watching from Albufeira.
If you are only in town for a few days, book this trip early – that way, a cancellation still leaves you a replacement date.
Who it is not for
- Pregnant guests and people with back or neck problems: the operator itself advises against it. If in doubt, check with a doctor first.
- Babies under one year: according to Dream Wave, not suitable.
- Anyone who wants to spend as long as possible inside the cave: no motorboat can do that. The boat types compared are in Which boat to Benagil?.
- Anyone looking for quiet at the railing: 47 seats are 47 seats.

No. 3 comes from the same operator, starts at the same desk and costs the same: half an hour shorter, smaller group. According to the operator, it runs on the RIB Insónia with 12 to 18 seats – it has no toilet. Three of our 20 most popular trips run by catamaran: two at €30 each, one four-hour trip with brunch at €49. That is calmer; whether the particular catamaran goes into the cave itself is stated on the booking page. All the options are under Benagil cave tours, dolphin watching and catamaran tours.
In short
A large, stable boat with a toilet, departure from the marina, a long coastal run to the west, a search for dolphins and, in calm seas, a swim stop. This is not a cave trip in the strict sense: time in Benagil is short, and entry is not guaranteed. Anyone who knows that gets two and a half hours of coast between Albufeira and Benagil for €31.19.
