Jeep safari or quad bike from Albufeira: which inland half-day should you book?
Updated October 12, 2026 · 5 min read
If you want to see the inland Algarve without driving, take the half-day jeep safari with hotel pickup – €40, four hours, 4.7 stars from 2,357 reviews. If the point is to drive something yourself, the quad tour is the one, from €81 per group of up to two – and it comes with a licence check and a deposit that the jeep does not.
These two sound like the same afternoon and are not. In a jeep you are a passenger, you swim and taste things. On a quad you work, and the stops are shorter.

The jeep safari with hotel pickup
The operator, Alsafari Tours, collects you at your hotel in the Albufeira area and says explicitly that it only does pickups there. From then on it is orange groves, cork forests and villages on the back roads, a stop at a local farm with honey and liqueurs, and a distillery where you taste Medronho, the local fruit brandy. There is time to swim in a river. Guides speak English, French, Portuguese and Spanish, and a private group can be arranged.
Reviews on the page keep singling out guides by name. The one criticism in the review summary is that some jeeps could be cleaner and better maintained. Bring swimwear, a towel, sun cream, water and a hat.
If the wine matters more than the river, our guide to the 4×4 safari with vineyard wine tasting covers the €58 version.
The mountain safari: castle and springs
At €40 and four hours it is priced like the first, but the route is different. The jeep is a convertible shared with other participants, with a roof for rain. The stops listed are the castle of Paderne for a photo stop, the village of Paderne, a farm with spirits, tea and jams, and two swimming spots near Alte: Fonte Grande and Queda do Vigário – swimming only “if conditions allow”.
Two differences matter. Pickup is from a meeting point, not the hotel: the listing gives two options, one of them at a McDonald’s on Rua das Telecomunicações. And the guides speak English and Portuguese only. According to the booking page, children under 4 are not accepted, nor are wheelchair users and people with mobility impairments; food and drink may not be consumed in the vehicle.

The quad tour: you are the driver
Everything about this one is stricter, and you should know it before you book:
- The driver must be at least 18 and show a valid car driving licence; provisional or learner licences are not accepted. Passport or ID card is also required, and without the documents there is no refund.
- A security deposit of €100 is due in cash or by card.
- Weight limit per quad is 160 kg. The booking page excludes children under 7, pregnant women, people with back problems and wheelchair users. Sandals and flip-flops are not allowed.
- You choose a 1-seater or 2-seater. The €81 is quoted per group of up to two; check on the booking page which option it covers.
The ride itself is a 20-minute briefing, then gravel roads, tracks and rocky paths in the countryside around Paderne with a break at a mill weir and a view of Paderne Castle. Two things to know: under government fire-risk restrictions the tour runs on paved roads instead of the usual off-road trails, and the review summary says some riders wanted more off-road time and a faster pace. A minimum of two vehicles is needed to run the tour.

Who should book which
The quad does not fit a party with a mixed group: whoever is not driving is the pillion, and anyone under 7 is out. The jeep suits a mixed group better. The mountain safari turns away under-4s; the Alsafari page lists no age restriction at all, so ask the operator about small children before booking. The verdict
For most people the jeep safari with hotel pickup is the better half-day: the same price as the mountain tour, no meeting point to find, and a river to swim in. Choose the mountain safari if the castle and the Alte springs matter more than a hotel pickup; choose the quad only if you want to be the one at the controls and are ready for the deposit.
